Understanding ADHD
ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Symptoms often begin in childhood and can impact academic, occupational, and social functioning. With the right support and evidence-based interventions, individuals with ADHD can develop effective coping strategies and thrive in daily life.
What to Expect During Your Visit
The Intake & Background Interview
Your first visit — or your child’s — is a comprehensive clinical interview covering developmental history, symptoms across settings, and the ways ADHD may be showing up in daily life at home, at school, or at work. This in-depth conversation gives our clinician the full picture needed to guide the evaluation and ensure the assessment that follows is tailored to your unique needs.
The Evaluation
Your second visit is dedicated to testing. Using validated, research-based tools, our clinician will administer a comprehensive battery of assessments designed to evaluate attention, executive functioning, memory, and processing — providing the objective data needed to support an accurate diagnosis and inform your personalized treatment plan.
Your Feedback Session
Your third visit is your feedback session. Our clinician will walk you through the assessment findings in detail, explain what the results mean, and answer any questions you have. Together, you will discuss next steps and develop a clear, personalized plan — whether that includes therapy, skill-building, accommodations support, school or workplace recommendations, or referrals for additional care.
Your Report, Your Next Steps
A completed ADHD assessment is more than a diagnosis — it is a document that opens doors. Your written report can be used to request academic or workplace accommodations, guide your treatment team, inform medication management, and provide documentation for disability or legal purposes. We will help you understand your results and use them to advocate effectively for yourself or your child.

Key Benefits of ADHD Evaluation
Improved Clairty and Organization
For many people, an ADHD diagnosis comes after years of confusion, frustration, or being told they simply need to try harder. A comprehensive assessment cuts through the uncertainty, providing an accurate, evidence-based understanding of what is actually going on — and why certain tasks, environments, or relationships have always felt more difficult than they should.
Personalized Treatment Options
ADHD looks different in every person. A thorough evaluation identifies your specific profile of strengths and challenges, allowing clinicians, educators, and other providers to design support that is genuinely tailored to you — rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach that may have fallen short in the past.
Access to Accomodations
A formal assessment report is often the key that unlocks academic accommodations, workplace adjustments, and disability services. Whether it is extended time on exams, a quieter work environment, or access to support programs, having the documentation to back your needs can make a meaningful difference in daily functioning and long-term success.
Empowerment
Understanding how your brain — or your child’s brain — works changes everything. It reframes years of struggle not as personal failure but as a neurodevelopmental difference that can be understood, supported, and worked with. That shift in perspective can reduce shame, build self-compassion, and lay a powerful foundation for growth, resilience, and a more fulfilling life.

ADHD Evaluations FAQ
For ADHD, When Should I Seek Help, and Where Do I Start?
What age does MindWell evaluate for ADHD?
MindWell conducts ADHD evaluations for individuals ages 4 and up — across the full lifespan, from young children through adults. While some children begin showing signs of ADHD around the time they start school, many families seek an evaluation later when symptoms are more clearly affecting academic or home functioning. For adults, ADHD often goes unrecognized until the demands of independent living make it harder to compensate — a diagnosis at any age can lead to meaningful improvements in daily functioning and quality of life.
Why do individuals seek testing for ADHD?
People seek ADHD evaluations for a wide range of reasons. Common experiences include inconsistent performance at school or work despite strong effort, being told they are underachieving their potential, difficulty managing day-to-day responsibilities like time, finances, and follow-through on goals, frequently forgetting or overlooking important details, and acting impulsively or struggling to slow down. ADHD symptoms can cause significant distress in relationships, work, school, and daily life — and often generate chronic feelings of frustration, guilt, or confusion about why things feel harder than they seem to for others. For some, especially adults, symptoms were present in childhood but went unrecognized until the demands of independent life made them harder to manage alone.
What is included in an ADHD evaluation at MindWell?
A MindWell ADHD evaluation is comprehensive and individualized. Specific components may include self-, caregiver-, and teacher-completed behavior rating scales; in-person psychological testing assessing attention, memory, executive functioning, and intelligence; direct clinical observation; review of school and medical records; screening for co-occurring learning disabilities or academic difficulties as needed; and referrals for additional screening to rule out other medical conditions that may produce ADHD-like symptoms, such as vision, hearing, speech/language, or neurological concerns. The evaluation concludes with a full written report and a dedicated feedback session to walk through findings and recommendations.
What does the ADHD evaluation process look like from start to finish?
How long does it take to receive my report?
Following the completion of testing, clinicians typically require two to three weeks to score, interpret, and prepare a comprehensive written report. Your feedback appointment will be scheduled once the report is complete.
Does MindWell evaluate for ADHD in adults?
Yes. MindWell evaluates for ADHD across the full lifespan. Adult ADHD is often underdiagnosed — many adults spent years developing compensatory strategies that masked their symptoms until the demands of independent life, career, or relationships made them harder to sustain. An accurate diagnosis in adulthood can be clarifying and transformative, opening doors to appropriate supports, treatment, and a better understanding of how you think and work.
What happens after the evaluation?
You will receive a detailed written report and meet with your clinician to review findings and recommendations. Depending on outcomes, recommendations may include therapy at MindWell, medication consultation with a prescribing provider, academic or workplace accommodations, coaching, or other community resources. You will leave with a clear picture of your or your child’s profile and a concrete plan for what comes next.
Does MindWell accept insurance for ADHD evaluations?
At this time, MindWell is unable to bill insurance directly for psychological evaluation services. We provide superbills upon request, which clients can submit to their insurance provider for potential out-of-network reimbursement. We recommend contacting your insurance provider in advance to understand your out-of-network benefits for psychological testing.
How much does an ADHD evaluation cost?
Evaluation fees vary depending on the scope of the assessment. For current fee information, please visit our Evaluation Fees page. We are happy to discuss your specific concerns and help determine the right evaluation before any financial commitment is required.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required. You are welcome to contact MindWell directly to get started. For families with children, we recommend consulting with your pediatrician beforehand, as they may have completed initial screenings that provide helpful context for the evaluation.
What if the results are not what I expected?
Our evaluations are open-ended and guided by the data gathered — the outcome may not always align with a diagnosis you anticipated or currently self-identify with. Regardless of findings, your clinician will provide honest, clear feedback and recommendations that reflect your or your child’s unique strengths, challenges, and ways of engaging with the world. A thorough evaluation is valuable regardless of outcome.
Does MindWell take a neurodiversity-affirming approach?
Yes. MindWell is committed to comprehensive, strengths-based, and neurodivergent-affirming evaluations. We use a combination of standardized measures and in-depth clinical interviews to understand both objective data and each individual’s lived experience. Our goal is always to give you an accurate and useful picture of how a person thinks — not reduce them to a set of deficits.
